Lee Mallory – A life of
Inspiration and Action By Sandra T. Molina
“Because
it’s killing me,” replied musician and Hepatitis C
Aware activist Lee Mallory matter-of-factly a few
months before he died last spring about the importance
of speaking out about the dangers of Hepatitis C.
Being a musician/activist isn’t anything new, one
needs only to think of U2’s frontman Bono garnering
Nobel Peace Prize nominations in the past few years
and meeting with world leaders on the issue of AIDS
and world hunger. It’s one thing too actually be an
artistic inspiration to a community of musicians,
but to be an inspiration to that community on a humanitarian
level is something quite rare.
For
Mallory, who helped originate the California sound
of the 1960s, he encouraged fellow musicians living
in and around San Francisco, to quit smoking, quit
using drugs and to embrace a healthier lifestyle.
Mallory knew from where he spoke, since he dealt with
drug addiction and was a lifetime smoker. He admitted
that he probably contracted Hepatitis C from his own
drug use. It’s the way in which approximately four
million Americans have contracted this disease. He
acknowledged that talking about having the disease
was something people are reluctant to do. “There probably
are musicians in the community that have it, but I
guess people just try to keep it to themselves,” he
said during the brief but eye-opening interview. Mallory
talked in a soft but clearly resolute voice about
the importance of spreading the word on a disease
that is one of the most common causes of chronic liver
disease because he felt a responsibility to do so.
“I’m terminal, but if I can help anyone out there
by spreading some kind of wisdom [about the disease]
or whatever…” he said trailing off not knowing what
else he could add. What was there to add?
He
was making a difference by just granting the interview,
which wasn’t the easiest thing to do. Most of his
days, according to his girlfriend and fellow musician
Nina Jo Smith, was spent being up most of the night,
sleeping most of the day and making music when he
was awake. This willingness to be an example to others
and encourage them to take care of their health inspired
the city and county of San Francisco to proclaim Jan.
10 as Lee Mallory Day for the second year in a row.
On the same day he celebrated his 60th birthday last
year, Mallory was first honored and was in attendance
to accept the acknowledgement from the city and county
officials. “It was great,” he said about the honor.
“It was a huge party. ”He was honored for not only
entertaining thousands throughout his decades-long
career, but also being a mentor to generations of
musicians in the area’s burgeoning open mic scene,
most notably at the Hotel Utah. At the time, Mallory
was seven weeks into being a non-smoker after completing
the San Francisco General Hospital’s non-smoking class.
This accomplishment earned the founding member of
The Millennium and other bands, a certificate of achievement
from the San Francisco Department of Public Health
Tobacco Free Project Stop Smoking Program.
“He saw his life as a cautionary tale,” Smith said
soon after Mallory’s death about his work with HepCAware.org.
“He hoped that being involved with educating people
might help other wonderful people live longer.” Hepatitis
C infection is a major public health problem throughout
the world, yet it is largely preventable. Knowledge
is power and prevention can happen through awareness!
